What is a Ghillie Suit?

A ghillie suit is a type of camouflage clothing that is designed to break up the human outline and help the wearer blend into nature.  Made from natural jute twine, burlap or synthetic thread, it is constructed to resemble heavy foliage.  Ghillie Suits are typically constructed using an inner shell, netting and jute.  Jute is attached to netting or directly onto military BDUs or jumpsuits.

Who wears a Ghillie Suit?

Paintballers or airsoft players who want to be snipers wear ghillie suits to help them blend in with their surroundings.  The ghillie suit offers an additional concealment advantage over players with normal camo clothes. Paintball ghillie suits and airsoft ghillie suits are very popular with those who play these simulation sports.  Kids ghillie suits have recently become popular during Halloween also.

Government and local law enforcement have been increasingly using ghillie suits to aid in undercover surveillance.  The ghillie suit provides excellent cover for observing, gathering evidence and taking photographs.

Hunters employ ghillie suits to help them get closer to their prey while hunting or they use the cover of the ghillie suit to allow their prey to move towards them without being seen.

And of course, there are military ghillie suits that the US military uses in their tactical operations.  The USMC, Marines, Army and Special operations all employ ghillie suits.

What kind of ghillie suits are there?

There are many different types of ghillie suits available.  Most can be broken down into 2 categories, a jacket and pants combination ghillie suit or a one piece poncho type.  We typically recommend the jacket and pants combination as it is more mobile when worn 100% of the time.  For the airsoft and paintball player, this is their main concern.  The main advantage of the poncho type suit is that it can be quickly deployed.  In conditions where you may have to move fast or walk a far distance and do not require the added camouflage, one can move with the ghillie poncho stowed away and quickly put it on once at the destination.

Ghillie Suits come in 4 main color patterns, woodland, mossy, desert and snow.  The woodland pattern is by far the most popular pattern we sell.  Desert is second with mossy coming in 3rd.  The patterns differ by manufacturer so you must look at the pictures carefully if you are comparing a woodland suit made by Bushrag vs. Stealth Suit vs. Swiss Link vs. Ghilliesuits.  The chameleon and jackal ghillie suits are very different than the standard ghillie suits.

What about Ghillie Suit Accessories?

The leading ghillie suit accessories is the ghillie rifle wrap or rifle rag kit.  If you are going to purchase a ghillie suit, you must also consider camouflaging your airsoft or paintball gun.  Your hunting rifle is probably the only piece of equipment that will protrude from your ghillied up outline.  You must soften the gun's outline with a rifle wrap.

If you wear a backpack you may want to consider a ghillie pack cover or using a ghillie poncho.  Again, you must make sure that your entire body's 3d outline has been broken up.

What is a Ghillie Kit?

A ghillie kit contains all the ghillie construction materials needed to create a ghillie suit or ghillie poncho or to add to your current ghillie suit.  The kits typically contain ghillie suit netting and jute twine.  Making a homemade ghillie suit allows you to customize your colors.  It also takes patience and time.  We have instructional pages and video on how to make a ghillie suit within our site.  You can find your own material to build a ghillie suit.  You simply need to purchase some burlap, some ghillie suit dye and ghillie netting.  Our kits are an excellent value as they save you the time to locate and prepare the materials.  With some time and alot of sweat equity you can build your own marine ghillie suit.
